Welcome To Bob Gruen's Home on the Web

October 2013 - April 2014 Update
From my birthday party in the fall to a great exhibition
opening in the Spring, it's been a very good few months filled with great times: Billie Joe Armstrong and Debbie Harry, Lez Zeppelin, Patti Smith, the Sundance Festival (for skiing), then to LA to photograph Gene Simmons, and to Austin for SXSW and ending with an opening at Pop International Galleries with Jim Jarmusch and Allison Mosshart in New York... see below.

October 23 - Billie Joe Armstrong, Debbie Harry & Jesse Malin helped me celebrate my birthday at R Bar.

October 23 - My 68th birthday party at R Bar featured a big cake but it was all gone by the end of the party.

October 23 - Lez Zeppelin was the surprise band who kept everyone dancing to Led Zep hits at the party. My son Kris also played at the party.

October 23 - Sachiko Nishihara came to the party from Japan with my friend Yuya Uchida.

October 23 - The Blender Gallery in Sydney Australia opened an exhibition of my photos. I couldn't go there for the opening but the exhibit was a big success.

October 31 - For Halloween we went to see David Johansen do his Buster Poindexter show uptown at the Carlyle.

November 5 - The Area Club was a unique place in the '80's with a different art theme every month which drew a very creative crowd. Club owner Eric Goode has made a book about it which was celebrated with a party at The Hole featuring naked dancers, above, looking through the floor at the S&M show below.

November 5 - At the afterparty for the Area Club book we ran into our old friend Smutty Smiff of the Rockats. He introduced me to Alex Calderwood of the Ace hotel who suggested sponsoring an exhibition of my photos. Alex tragically passed away only a week later, and the Ace organization is planning to carry out his last idea with an exhibition of my photos in London in the Fall.

November 7- Ronnie Wood & Mick Taylor came to the Cutting Room for two nights of amazing blues.

November 22 - My good friend Sparkie Martin introduced me to the Schomburg Library in Harlem to plan an exhibition there and then took us on a tour of the neighborhood.

December 16 - Patti Smith was one of the many performers who paid tribute to Lou Reed at the memorial at the Apollo Theater.

January 20 - Richie Sambora, Toby Mamis, Bob Gruen & Kris Gruen meet backstage after Kris' ASCAP show during the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, UT.

January 23 - I caught up with Dave Brolan & Henry Diltz at the Jim Marshall exhibit opening at Leica Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.

January 25 - The Gene Simmons family after my photo shoot with Gene for Tokyo Journal magazine at Anaheim Stadium in Los Angeles, CA.

February 6 - My photo of Chrissie Hynde was included in the 'American Cool' exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.

February 9 - Allan Tannenbaum & I shared a room to display our photos at The Fest For Beatles Fans at the Grand Hyatt hotel.

February 18 - Sean Lennon presented his mom with a cake at Yoko's 81st birthday party at Sear Sound in New York. His present to her was a band to back her as she recorded some new tracks.

March 3 - Glen Matlock & Syl Sylvain brought their new tour to the Cutting Room, playing acoustic versions of their Sex Pistols and New York Dolls hits.

March 12 Austin, TX- Blondie after their SXSW interview at the Austin Convention Center.

March 13 Austin, TX- I was on the panel 'The Band Portrait' with Piper Ferguson, BP Fallon, Lynn Goldsmith, Anna Webber, above (and Ken Weinstein, not pictured) during SXSW at Austin Convention Center.

March 13 Austin, TX - Sean Lennon & Charlotte Kemp Muhl of GOASTT during SXSW at Hotel Vegas in Austin, TX.

March 13 Austin, TX - At the GOASTT show I saw this great t-shirt worn by a pretty fan.

March 14 - BP Fallon & The Ghost Wolves during SXSW at The Dog & Duck in Austin, TX.

March 14 Austin, TX - The Strypes are the hottest new group I saw during SXSW. I met them there at the Lou Reed tribute and a few days later they came to my studio in New York for a photo session.

March 14 Austin, TX - Foxboro Hot Tubs before their show at Brazos Hall. Then they played a fast and loud and very crazy punk set.

March 14 Austin, TX - My son Kris Gruen & Billie Joe Armstrong catch up after the show at Brazos Hall in Austin, TX.

March 15 Austin, TX - The Foxboro Hot Tubs with Clem Burke at Rachael Ray's SXSW Feedback Party at Stubb's where both Blondie and Foxboro Hot Tubs played amazing sets.

March 15 Austin, TX - Jesse Malin & Alejandro Escovedo during SXSW at Maria's Taco Xpress in Austin, TX.

March 16 Austin, TX - Nancy Rankin (Alejandro's new fiance), with Alejandro Escovedo & Richard Barone who organized the moving Lou Reed Tribute that was a highlight of this year's SXSW..

April 3rd - NYC - Pop International Galleries at 473 West Broadway in New York's Soho hosted a large exhibition of my photos, with 4 new silkscreen prints by Gary Lichtenstein of my images as this one of John Lennon in the window display.

April 3rd - NYC - The opening night was a great party. It was crowded all night and everyone was talking about the new 'teenage bedroom' installation, the wall of contact prints and the new silkscreens.

April 3rd - NYC - Jim Jarmusch came to check out the wall of contact prints which show the rest of the roll of film in which the exhibit photos come from.. A lot of people were interested to see the outtakes of famous shots.

April 5th - NYC - Allison Mosshart came to see the Pop exhibit. She liked my installation of the 'teenage bedroom' which I set up to show how a lot my images were first used, by kids putting them up in their bedrooms and living with them.
